Students
who are identified as having Special Educational Needs or those who
perform significantly below expectations as a result of General or
Specific Learning Difficulty may benefit from Learning Support in the
following ways:
A
qualified learning support teacher provides "Extra Tuition" in
English and Maths. These students are selected on the basis of
assessment results and are withdrawn from Continental Languages.
Students are assessed on an ongoing basis and Individual Education Plans
are implemented where appropriate. This facility is available to Junior
Cycle students (1st to 3rd year)
Support is given to students who qualify for Resource hours under Dept. of
Education & Science guidelines. The resource teachers and the
learning support teacher work closely together to assess the individual
needs of each student. Students are withdrawn for additional classes
according to their needs and resource teachers work closely with subject
teachers to ascertain where support is most needed.
Provision
is made for students who qualify for S.N.A. under the Department of
Education & Science guidelines. The role of the S.N.A. is determined
by the individual needs of each student.
In a limited number of cases the full
curriculum is not practicable for the student with special educational
needs. Decisions regarding the curriculum are made in consultation with
all interested parties. These may include student, parents, learning
support teacher, resource teacher, class teachers, visiting teachers,
N.E.P.S. and school management.
Some students qualify for an Irish /
language exemption. These exemptions are often recommended by an
Educational Psychologist.
There are a wide range of arrangements available for
students with special educational needs in state exams. The learning
support team consults with students and parents to assess the provision
most suited to the individual student.
