St. Colman's College became part of the
"Seismnology in Schools Programme" in
October 2011 and is a member of the Seismology Ireland (SIE) regional network
of monitoring stations.
The seismometer is monitoring 24 hours a
day and is connected to a dedicated
computer which records all or any ground
movements and tremors. This page will
provide a log of events recorded in the
College as they happen and will be
updated by the earthquake committee.

Turkish Earthquake recorded
Monday, October 24, 2011

The devastating
earthquake in Eastern Turkey was monitored and
recorded by St. Colman's new
seismograph over the weekend.
The
7.2-magnitude tremor devastated parts of Van
province in the east of the country, killing and
injuring hundreds of people as well as
collapsing dozens of buildings into piles of
twisted steel and chunks of concrete.

Seismometer for St. Colman's
October 3, 2011

St. Colman's College receives
a seismometer and becomes part of the Seismographs in Schools
network which monitors and tracks earthquakes and seismic movement.
The College is very grateful to Prof. Gerry Wrixon of
UCC who so generously sponsored the equipment.
The College staff and students were introduced to the
seismograph by Mr. Tom Blake of the Dublin Institute for
Advanced Studies who gave a very informative and
thorough presentation on seismology after which the
formal handover was made.
Pictured at the handover of the equipment were Prof. Gerry Wrixon
UCC, Dermot Coakley Principal SCC, Tom Blake, Irish National Seismic
Network, Jimmy Condon, Garvan Queeney, Claire McCarthy and Patrick
Donnelly, Geography teachers SCC as well as participating students.
