Rugby world champion Mike Ross is a famous past pupil of St. Colman’s College in Fermoy. On his return to the College on Friday March 21, 2014 with the Six Nations Cup, Mike received one of the most rousing and enthusiastic hero’s welcome the school has ever witnessed. A packed assembly hall included students, teachers and even visiting Loreto girls welcomed Mike Ross back as rugby champion and true local hero. College principal Veronica O’Donoghue welcomed and paid tribute to him, describing him as a good friend to St. Colman’s and an inspirational individual.  In his address to the crowd, Mike said he felt at home in and around Fermoy and appreciated the support of the College. He engaged in banter with the lads and showed that he truly had them in the palm of his hand. Before leaving Mike took time out to meet and greet, to sign autographs and
pose for photographs with his legions of fans. Mike appeared on The late Late Show that evening where he paid tribute to St. Colman’s and described the great day of welcome. Mike was a past pupil of St. Colman’s College 1992 to 1998. A native of Ballyhooly, he is remembered as a nice quiet, shy individual but very good academically. Teachers at the time and particularly the then guidance counsellor Veronica O’Donoghue, remember him as a quiet, generous natured, solid and well balanced individual who showed great determination and perseverance. He initially played rugby with the local Fermoy club, then quickly making the 1st team for UCC and four years with Cork Con. In 2006, he was offered a three year contract with Harlequins and after a brief appearance in a Munster strip (once) Mike donned the Leinster  colours, a
post he still holds. His national debut came in 2009 when he was chosen for the Irish team in Canada and USA. His Six Nations debut was in 2011 against Italy and since then he has been bringing solidarity to the national scrum. Described by rugby experts as “top scrummager and key to Leinster success in Heineken Cups”, many more accolades have followed the Fermoy man including Ireland’s success in progressing to the quarter final s of the Rugby World Cup in Australia and being named as team of the tournament by RTE’s Six Nations Sports Dept. In 2011, Mike was invited back to St. Colman’s as special guest at the annual awards’ night when he also received  the St. Colman’s Past Pupil Award. The theme for the awards’ night was courage, perseverance and achieving your goals. Little did we know what was to come!
